The death is being treated as suspicious and a murder inquiry is under way. A 72-year-old man from Nelson has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

A Home Office post-mortem examination showed Ms Houghton died as a result of head injuries.

Today Ms Houghton’s family said: “Mandy was a much-loved Mum, sister and grandma. She was a happy soul that wouldn't hurt a fly. She has been taken from us too soon and is going to be deeply missed.”

Det. Chief Inspector Gareth Willis, of Lancashire Police’s Force Major Investigation Team, said: “My thoughts remain with Mandy’s family and all her loved ones at this time.
