Simon Barras, who pinched coffee to the tune of £52 from Aldi and washing tablets worth £40 from Wilko, was specifically named by staff at both stores.

Burnley magistrates heard how Barras, who struck six days apart in June, had taken up begging to fund his habit and had not committed any other offences, but resorted back to stealing after police stopped him.

The 43-year-old, from Forest Street, in the town, admitted two counts of theft, on June 21st and 27th. He was given a 12-month community order, with a drugs rehabilitation requirement and must pay £42.90 compensation.

Mr Nick Dearing, defending, said Barras had had a long-standing addiction to narcotics, primarily heroin, but also crack cocaine.

He had not been in trouble since June and was attending Inspire, the treatment service. The defendant wanted to be drug-free. Mr Dearing added: " Frankly, he's sick of being addicted to drugs. "
