Nancy Robinson was said to have been excitable, animated and in good spirits but then started to shout at a member of the public.

Robinson was breath-tested after police arrived at 8-45pm and was taken to the station, where a sample showed 52 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 mililitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Burnley magistrates were told Robinson (57) who had been to a pub in Colne with her boyfriend, had a record for being drunk and disorderly, but had not appeared in court since 2008.

The defendant, who was not represented by a solicitor, told the hearing she had not had a drink for more than four years.

She added: "My son died just under a year ago. It's the anniversary on Monday. Soon after this, I made a suicide attempt and the Crisis Team were brought in. I went back in hospital.

"My mother bought the car to get her to hospital appointments. I would like to apologise. I just don't want to lose my licence because of my mum."

The defendant, of Cowhurst Avenue, Todmorden, admitted driving with excess alcohol on March 27th. She was fined £120, with £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Robinson was banned for 12 months.
