Alexander Cole had been seen overtaking vehicles in “an aggressive manner” in a Renault Megane, on Manchester Road, Burnley, at 10-10am.

Miss Stephanie Varle (prosecuting) told the town’s magistrates: “The driver took a left-hand turning at speed into Clevelands Road. Unfortunately, he crashed into a marked police car.”

Miss Varle said the officer got out of the vehicle and Cole handed over his keys, but then drove off.

The defendant, whose licence had been revoked, has now been banned for six months under the totting up procedure.

Cole, of Berry Street, Burnley, admitted driving without due care and attention, failing to stop after an accident and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, last November 26th.

He was fined £240, with £100 costs and a £30 victim surcharge. The Bench gave the defendant eight points on his licence and as he already had six, he was disqualified.

Mr Daniel Frazer (defending) said: “He was of the opinion that he did have a licence. His licence was revoked. He was disqualified for 12 months and had to apply for his licence back. He didn’t do.”

He said Cole had a 16-year-old dog that needed emergency veterinary treatment, had gone to see if he could get an appointment and was told to bring the animal down.
