A drunken taxi passenger who attacked the driver couldn’t have gone more quietly for questioning – he was taken to the police station by his victim and walked straight in, a court heard.

Burnley magistrates were told how George Riley (29) had punched Mohammed Shazad in the arm after a row over drinking in the vehicle and the fare.

Riley, of Sunningdale Gardens, went to see officers when delivered to the police station by the cabbie but refused to believe he had done anything wrong as, he claimed, it was out of character for him.

The defendant admitted assault on March 7th. He was sentenced to a four week curfew, between 8pm and 8am, had to pay £50 costs, £50 compensation and a £150 criminal court charge.
