A shoplifter with a dog tried to fend off police arresting him as he did not want the animal taking to a pound, a court heard.

Christopher Chapman (32) had helped himself to 24 sets of Pringle socks, worth £143.76, at TKMaxx, the town’s magistrates were told. Officers had to be assisted by store security to arrest him.

Chapman, who has 76 offences on his record, has abused drink and drugs, but is said to be making genuine efforts to sort his problems out, the court heard.

Chapman, of Cairo Street, admitted theft and resisting police on February 9th and committing a further offence while subject to a six-month conditional discharge, for theft.

He was given a six-month community order with 20 days rehabilitation and fined £5 with £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
