Burnley Council leader praises bravery of store staff and customers during shocking stabbing incident

The leader of Burnley Council has praised staff and customers for their brave actions during an incident at the town's Marks and Spencer store yesterday which saw two women stabbed.

Two women were seriously injured in the shocking incident which resulted in a 57-year-old local man being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Council leader Coun. Mark Townsend said: "All our thoughts are with those injured and caught up in this horrendous incident and we wish them a speedy recovery.

"It seems from reports of the incident that staff and members of the public acted quickly and bravely to contain the suspect and prevent any further violence while police officers rushed to the scene.

"The police have said they are not treating this as a terrorist incident. Hopefully they will be able to quickly establish the facts behind this horrifying attack. I'd ask that anyone with information about the incident get in touch with the police so they can help with their inquiries.

"While this has been a shocking moment for everyone it is an isolated incident."
