A battery thief pinched 11 packets to use in his grandchildren's toys, Burnley Magistrates Court heard.

The court was told how Gary Bradley (39) was seen by a security guard at Poundland in the town and was stopped. Bradley, of Holmes Square, Burnley, admitted theft to the tune of £33, on Wednesday, October 5th.

He was given a 12-month conditional discharge and was told to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.

Mr Nick Dearing, defending Bradley, said he had been given a drugs programme and rehabilitation activity requirement for theft on Tuesday, October 11th.

The solicitor said: "He admitted he had relapsed into drugs misuse. He showed clear insight into the steps he needed to take to address his drugs problems. He has complied fully with the order.
