Baseball bat gangs in lunchtime clash in Burnley town centre

VIOLENCE erupted in Burnley town centre on Monday afternoon when two gangs of men confronted each other with baseball bats.

The frightening incident, which some passers-by witnessed, happened outside Burnley Town Hall at 1 p.m. and led to scores of police officers being mobilised.

One witness said: “I saw men fighting each other with baseball bats. It was very frightening and not what you’d expect in broad daylight.”

Another witness reported seeing one car “ram” into the back of another. Another saw men acting suspiciously in Burnley Road, Cliviger, throwing balaclavas and baseball bats into grass there.

Police confirmed they arrested one man following the disturbance.

A spokesman said: “Police were called to a confrontation between two groups of men who are known to each other at around 1 p.m. on Monday in Manchester Road.

“Three vehicles have been seized and a 33-year-old man from Winsford has been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and criminal damage. He is being questioned at Burnley Police Station and an investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the incident should call Burnley Police on 01282 425001.”
