Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after an elderly woman had her handbag snatched by a man as she walked near her home in Burnley.

The incident took place around 7pm on Friday when the 72-year-old victim was walking down Barry Street wearing a jade green coloured coat and carrying a shopping bag.

The lady stopped to look in her bag when a man came up behind her, pushed her against the wall and snatched her bag from her before running off towards Alder Street.

The offender is described as white, aged in his late 20s, 5ft. 5in. tall and of slim build. He was wearing a light grey hooded top.

DC Wendy Hart from Pennine CID said: “Fortunately she was not hurt but the offender has taken a large sum of money, her house keys, bus pass and pension card.

“This lady is extremely vulnerable and has clearly been targeted. I would appeal to anybody that witnessed this robbery or with any information that could help us to find the man responsible to contact police on 101.”
