A concert of composers from along the canal

The Langcliffe Singers will perform “From Sunrise to Sunset” at the church at 7-30pm, with choral music and readings associated with people and places on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to celebrate the 200th anniversary of its completion.

The concert includes works by Wesley (Leeds), Dyson (Halifax), Delius (Bradford), Duckworth (Colne), Holmes (Burnley), Booth (Accrington) and Bruch (Liverpool) with Booth’s “Mass in G” being performed for the first time in 100 years.

Canal historian Mike Clarke, one of the Langcliffe Singers, said: “The title is from the Latin inscription on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Company’s coat of arms “Ab Ortu, ad Ocassum” which translates as “From East to West” or “From Sunrise to Sunset”.

“All except one piece were composed by people who lived or worked along the line of the canal.

“There is even a tenuous connection with Gisburn church, the venue for our concert.

“A branch canal to Settle was part of the original 1766 Grand Canal scheme to link the North Sea to the Irish Sea. Because of the cost, this was cut down to become the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, with the Settle Canal becoming a separate entity.”

Tickets are available from Cave and Crag in Settle, Bentham Post Office and Skipton Camera Centre as well as on the door on the night. It is £10 for adults and under-16s are free.
