Community to honour Afghan war hero Jordan (25)

Tony and Sheila Bancroft have decided the time is right to have a service to remember their son L/Cpl Jordan Bancroft (25) and to show their thanks to the public for their continued support since his death.

L/Cpl Bancroft was shot dead in Helmand on August 21st, 2010, while providing security to allow a shura to take place between international troops and village elders.

The service at All Saints’ Church in Earby will begin at 2pm after a parade leaves New Road Community Centre at 1-45pm.

Those wishing to take part in the parade are asked to gather at New Road by 1-30pm ready to be called into line.

The parade along the A56 will be led by the Union Flag and the Royal British Legion Standard, Army cadets and, it is hoped, Earby Brass Band, followed by family and friends of L/Cpl Bancroft.

Tony said: “The service is a way for the family to say thank you for all the support from close family and friends to the wider community as well.

“Over the last five years, the help has been absolutely fantastic and without it I don’t know where we would be. It’s kept the family together and strong.

“I wouldn’t say it is any easier now. We remember the good times. Obviously Jordan is always in our thoughts every day but we have learned to cope.

“We didn’t want it to be a solemn occasion. There will be a slideshow of pictures of Jordan in and out of uniform and most of the hymns will be joyful and upbeat.

“It will be a day of mixed emotions for everybody.

“After the service, we are having a gathering at the Punch Bowl as way of thanking them.

“They let Jordan’s Duke of Lancaster Regiment colleagues use it as a base for his funeral. The staff and owners were very welcoming.

“Moorhouses have also done a special beer and there will be a picture of Jordan on the pump.”

The side chapel in church will have a display about L/Cpl Bancroft, and the books of condolence will be there for anyone who missed the chance of signing them five years ago.

The church’s own memorial book will also be there opened at Jordan’s page. The gathering at the Punch Bowl will be from 3pm onwards and includes a pie and pea meal.
