COLNE: Drunken man on run from police rescued from river

A MAN jumped in a river trying to escape police and had to be rescued by firefighters.

The man, in his 20s, was helped out of Colne Water, in Green Road, Colne, just before 3 a.m. on Saturday.

Fire crews used a 10m ladder to get the man to safety and he was handcuffed by police.

Sgt. Keith Beckley of Colne Police said: “The man had been stopped by police, but ran away and jumped into the water. It was up to his knees and he was heavily intoxicated.

“Once he had been rescued he was placed in handcuffs while inquiries were made to ascertain whether an offence had occurred.

“Officers realised no offence had taken place, so the man was released without charge and taken home.”
