Colne cyclist Steven Burke in Olympics team that breaks world record

COLNE cyclist Steven Burke was in Britain’s men’s team pursuit quartet which stormed through qualifying with a world-record display at the Olympics last night.

With Ed Clancy, Pete Kennaugh and Geraint Thomas, he set a time of three minutes 52.499 seconds to reach today’s first round of the 4km event, knocking nearly a second off the record they set when winning the World Championships earlier this year.

Australia qualified second fastest, over three seconds behind the home team.

Eight teams take part in the first round today, with the top two qualifying for the gold medal match and the next two battling for bronze.
