Former footballer Bob Newton, whose clubs included Huddersfield and Chesterfield, got a shirt signed by Burnley’s Premier League stars after seeing an appeal for help for four-month-old puppy Anya on Facebook.

He donated it to Ann Davies, who works with a Romanian charity which cares for the country’s stray dogs, and she auctioned it off for £65 with Bob giving £20 of his own to take the tally to £85.

The money from the shirt will see Anya brought to England next month where she will live with Ms Davies in Shropshire and she will have hydro therapy sessions - 12 sessions cost £330 - before being rehomed permanently.

“I want to thank Burnley footballers and Bob for giving the shirt which will play a part in helping Anya,” said Ms Davies.

“Anya was a stray in Romania, wandering the streets, and they thought she had broken legs but it was rickets from being malnourished. We are just waiting for an X-Ray to find out the extent of her injuries before she comes to live with us.”

The name of the shelter where Anya was taken is Asociatia Amicii Nostri Turda Semper Sidelis if anyone wants to find out more information about their work. There are also details on the Facebook pages ‘Helping Anya’ and ‘Rus Fodor Dora Andrea.’
