Charity night remembers former Pendle pub couple

A CHARITY quiz night is to take place to continue the charitable work of a former Pendle couple.

The event will take place at the Ighten Mount Bowling Club in Burnley on Friday, September 16th, and will raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

One of the organisers, Jane Shanahan, is holding the event as a continuation of the tireless work her mother, Joan Thornber, used to do.

Joan, along with her husband Richard, also known as Tricky Dicky, ran the White Bear Inn in Barrowford and The Forest Inn on Cuckstool Lane, Fence, before moving to Las Americas in Tenerife.

Before that, Joan was landlady at the Lane Ends Inn on Higher Reedley Road in Brierfield and hosted many charity evenings throughout her working life in the pub trade, raising thousands of punds.

However, last September, Joan died in Pendleside Hospice after a short battle with cancer and even at her funeral, hundreds of pounds were raised for charity.

Jane said: “She wanted her funeral to be one big party to raise as much money as we could. Obviously, it wasn’t a party atmosphere which is why we are having the charity night a year later.

“I also want to stress this is in no way just a memorial night for Joan my mum. She wanted everybody to raise money for Macmillan.”

The night, which starts at 7-45 p.m., will include quizzes with a difference, there will be a raffle and a disco and a pie and pea supper is included in the price of the ticket at £5.

For information or to buy a ticket, contact Jane on 776020 or Gaynor on 424569. All proceeds on the night will go to Macmillan Cancer Support.
