Mr Daniel Swainston responded following the broadcast of the Channel Four News segment “Coming Out” for which he was interviewed with other residents discussing the Brexit vote.

The short film carried scene shots of boarded up houses, but was heavily edited according to Mr Swainston who works at Burnley Wood Club.

He said: “When the editing was done the programme-makers had taken all the good parts out and just left it with all the negative, making Burnley look like something out of the television drama ‘Shameless’.

“They did some really good interviews in the club with people discussing how we can overcome Brexit as a country with some good points made.

“I also gave them an interview about people’s views in the club, but it wasn’t used. It just paints us in a bad light.

“Members of Burnley Alliance Silver Band were interviewed but again that wasn’t used.”

Burnley Council leader Coun. Mark Townsend also said the national media was spreading “misconceptions” about Burnley.
