Renowned for having an atmosphere quite like no other, the Trafalgar Street venue was the place to go in the late 70s, early 80s.

Knocked down and replaced by McDonands, the spirit of this once popular place lives on and people are now being given the chance to share their memories in person at a ‘Hop Reunion’ night on Friday, February 26th.

Organised by former Hop DJ Chris Byrne, the event will be held at Remedy bar in the town centre between 9pm and 2am. The night will feature music from Chris and fellow DJ Pat Carter, who also used to work at the pub in its heyday.

A first reunion night, held back in June 2012, was hailed a massive success but Chris is confident this one will be even better.

“Me and Pat both did Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. At its time it was the only pub that opened until midnight – due to the selling of hot food.

“I met up with Pat in December 2011 after not being in touch with him for over 10 years. We got chatting about the good times at The Hop and we decided it would be a good idea to put on a reunion, as many people from this area have good memories of the venue. We thought it would be good for people to get together again.

“I set up the Facebook group and there’s over 600 members now. They regularly share their memories of the hop on there.

“We’ve had an awful lot of interest in this event. We can’t wait for it. It’s going to be a really good night and it’s free admission.”
