Cashpoint knifeman jailed for two years

Burnley Crown Court heard how the victim had withdrawn £40 from the ATM in Netherfield Road, Nelson, when she was targeted by Richard Jewell and an accomplice on a dark, winter’s evening. The other man had grabbed the victim’s arm, which he then put up her back.

The 29-year-old victim was told: “Give us the money. I have got a knife,” and Jewell, a drug addict, showed her what looked to her like a craft knife. She was very frightened and her money was taken from her.

The defendant (30), of Guildford Street, Brierfield, had admitted robbery in January. The court was told he had a criminal record, but nothing came close to the attack. Jewell was locked up for possessing drugs earlier in the year.

Sentencing, Recorder Philip Grundy said it must have been a terrifying experience for the victim. The judge said he accepted the offence was, in offence, out of character for the defendant, but was a serious offence of robbery at night, with a weapon, on a vulnerable victim. He told Jewell: “You know I have to impose a custodial sentence.”

Mr James Heyworth, defending Jewell, said his behaviour was explained by his involvement with Class A controlled drugs.
