St John’s CE Primary School at Higham has applied through Lancashire County Council for the new car park on adjacent land to the school off Higham Hall Road.

The 22 space car park, two of which are disabled spaces, is being proposed to accommodate the increase in traffic at school drop off and pick up times.

The application states that the car park is required to address health and safety issues during drop off and pick up times. There is no pavement on Higham Hall Road, and pedestrians have to walk in the highway to pass, something which the school is keen to address.

A Lancashire County Council spokesman said: “The intention is for the car park to take pedestrian movements as far from the public highway as possible.

“The new car park will also resolve existing problems of parents parking up and blocking private driveways.

“The planning application will be determined by the county council and a decision will be taken following consultation with the borough council, county highway authority and neighbouring properties.”
