Alison scoops prestige prize
Alison Watson, managing director of Class of Your Own, has been given the Richard Carter Prize by the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES) for Geospatial Engineer 2014.
The prize is awarded every two years to a geospatial professional who is judged to have made a significant difference to the civil engineering surveying industry, either individually or through team leadership.
Class of Your Own (COYO), founded in 2009, assists the education and construction industries in developing new ways to engage students, and inspire them to strive for a career in engineering.
Alison said: “The construction industry offers young people some fantastic job opportunities in an array of varied and vibrant roles, but in my experience these are rarely considered by students making their first career choices as they just don’t know what’s out there.
“Our mission at Class of Your Own is to inspire students and their teachers, providing them with valuable opportunities throughout their education to gain the knowledge and practical skills they’ll need to embark on a well-rounded career in the construction industry – whether that be as a surveyor, engineer or a bricklayer.”
COYO’s learning programme, Design, Engineer, Construct! (DEC!) is now a recognised GCSE qualification.
ICES president Ian Bush said: “I wholeheartedly commend Alison for her determination, enthusiasm and grit in creating this groundbreaking programme.”
