Prime Minister David Cameron has congratulated Burnley on being named the Most Enterprising Place in the UK 2013.

He was speaking during Prime Minister’s Question Time after MP Gordon Birtwistle picked up the award at the Enterprising Britain Awards in the House of Commons.

The accolade, awarded through the Government’s department for business, innovation and skills, recognises and celebrates the range of business, enterprise and economic development work that has reshaped Burnley’s reputation.

Mr Birtwistle said: “I was very proud to be involved in the presentation of this award which shows the positive change we have seen in Burnley. Only five years ago the town was declared by CentreforCities a basket case and has now become the envy of the UK where enterprise and business is thriving.

“The Burnley Bondholders Scheme is a really innovative scheme which connects all the companies across Burnley in helping to deliver innovation, entrepreneurship and growth in the economy. I asked the Prime Minister, David Cameron, for his views during Prime Minister’s Question Time and he congratulated businesses large and small in Burnley for the enterprise they have shown.

“This award has been won in a very difficult time in the economic cycle but proves the success of the Bondholders working closely with the Coalition Government. Burnley has received millions of pounds of Government investment which has helped to deliver growth and prosperity to the town.”
