Hair and beauty students put their skills to their test in a pilot inter-college competition held at Nelson and Colne College.

Students from Nelson and Colne, Accrington and Rossendale College and Craven College took part in the competition which included a range of categories from nail art to barbering.

The competition was the brainchild of Ann Flynn, head of division for hair and beauty at Nelson and Colne College.

She said: “It struck me that while we stage our own in-house competitions and compete on national levels, there was no regional events for pupils to take part in; so we decided to stage our own.

“It’s good for students to experience working to deadlines, coming up with new idea and learning from their peers. It was a really successful day, and good to see the students shine.

“They have each taken inspiration from the external demonstrators, and they’ve learn to work under pressure, but still produce fantastic work.

Ashley Lownsborough, of Nelson and Colne College, won first place in the Level 3 barbering category.

He said: “I’ve never taken part in a competition before, it was an interesting experience as I had to ensure my looks were professional and ready to be presented to a judging panel. It was a great day overall; I’ve picked up lots of tips.”

Fellow student Sarah Hepworth scooped first place in the Level 3 hairdressing Hair up evening style and was heavily praised by the judges.

She said: “I’ve really enjoyed the day, and I’m proud of the work I’ve achieved. I want to work on a cruise ship after college, and the experience today has increased my confidence and spurred me on to do the best I can.”
