The Burnley Town Hall workers set to lose their jobs during the latest wave of council cuts will be notified in January.

A total of 14 employees, from frontline and back office positions, will be hit with the devastating news in the New Year as the council tries to save more than £5m. over the next two years.

And with more than 100 further jobs at risk during those two years, North East Lancashire TUC’s secretary, Peter Thorne, said there was a real sense of doom and gloom around the building.

“It’s just going to get worse,” he said. “The workers affected this time around will be given their notices in January and will work until the end of March. More than 100 jobs will probably have to go over the next years which is a quarter of the workforce. It’s getting to the stage where it’s going to be difficult for the council to perform its statutory functions.”
