The achievements of Burnley women are being marked as part of a campaign to highlight their contribution to the borough and further afield.
The local campaign, under the theme “Behind every great town there are great women," has been championed by borough MP Julie Cooper.
The campaign is linked to this year’s 100th anniversary of women having the right to vote, but marks a wider drive to highlight women’s achievements.
Julie, whose personal achievement includes being one of a small number of women nationally who have been both a council leader and Member of Parliament, pressed for a local campaign after hearing about a similar scheme in London.
She said: “This year marks one of the most important milestones in British history, when women started to get the right to vote.
“It seemed an opportune moment to recognise the hard work and achievements of local women across a wide range of fields that contribute to making our borough the great place it is.
“Each one, in their own way, has overcome personal challenges to achieve success and make their mark in our society. Their achievements deserve wider recognition.”
As part of the campaign, Burnley Council is producing a set of boards for display outside the town hall featuring local women of achievement in a wide range of walks of life, including sport, business, voluntary work, community activity, and the arts.
The first set of women to be featured in the campaign are:
* Sophie Gibson – international artist
* Sophie Hitchon – sportswoman, Olympic medal winner in hammer throwing
* Muriel Jobling – fundraiser, founding chair and joint president of Pendleside Hospice
* Sajda Majeed – women’s health campaign, MBE for contribution to the community
* Claire Whelan – businesswoman, finance director of Burnley-based BCW Engineering, one of the UK’s most advanced engineering companies.
* Rachael White – entrepreneur who turned an online shopping hobby into a million-pound business.
Some of those featured went along to the launch.
The boards will be displayed on a rotating basis outside the town hall throughout the summer.
London used the hashtag #BehindEveryGreatCity as part of its social media campaign to mark women’s achievements which encouraged Julie to launch a similar scheme in her borough.
