Burnley engineering firm closes with loss of 60 jobs

AN ENGINEERING firm established by ex-Clarets director John Turkington has closed with the loss of around 60 jobs.

Turkington Europe, based at Billington Road Industrial Estate, was put into administration last month after financial problems in its American division.

Around 100 workers were laid off from the North Carolina base of group owners Turkington USA which was placed in receivership in February.

A claim was made regarding a guaranteed liability of $11m. which meant Burnley company directors were forced to place the firm into administration.

Andrew Haslam, of administrators Begbies Traynor, confirmed the closure of the Burnley plant which produced dough processing and baking equipment.

He said: “The administrators have reviewed the work in progress and retained 14 employees to assist with the completion of two contracts. All other employees have been made redundant.

“The administrators are confident of finding a purchaser for the company’s assets and have instructed Winterhill Largo to market Turkington Europe’s plant and machinery.”

Mr Turkington retired from his role as chairman in 2006.
