Burnley double murder: police given more time to quiz suspects

DETECTIVES have been granted an extra 24 hours to question five people in connection with a double murder in Burnley.

Four men and one woman were arrested on suspicion of murder on Wednesday and yesterday officers were granted a further warrant of detention at Burnley Magistrates’ Court.

Police were called to a flat in Waddington Avenue, Brunshaw, around 12-30 p.m. on Tuesday where they found two men dead inside a flat.

One of the men has been identified as 55-year-old James Atkinson who lived at the flat where he was found. The second man was later formally identified as Neil Gilmore, also 55-year, who was living at the same address.

Post-mortem examinations have revealed both men died of head injuries.

Senior investigating officer Det. Supt Neil Hunter said: “We have had a great response to our appeals so far but I am still keen to hear from people who knew Neil or James and, in particular, who may have been in contact with them in the days leading up to their deaths.

“It is essential we build up a picture of their last movements and I am convinced the answer to this case lies within information from the local community so I would urge people to come forward and speak with us.
