Burnley councillors have decided not to increase their allowances and expenses.

One of the votes in the council’s annual budget setting meeting was to accept an independent report on members’ allowances.

Coun. Margaret Lishman, the council’s Executive member for Resources, said: “This was definitely the right decision. Burnley’s allowance payments for elected councillors are already among the lowest in the region, if not the country. In spite of this, we were clear that it would not be right to increase the payments. This fits with the wider choices that councillors have made to tighten belts and prioritise spending where it’s most needed. Restricting councillor’s expenses to the current level is a small contribution, but shows that the whole organisation is working to the same end.”
