Burnley College students help revamp of Burnley Central Station

Students dismayed at the state of Burnley Central Station have unveiled a new sign which welcomes visitors to the town after giving the station a new look.

Countryside Management students formed the Friends of Burnley Central Group and teamed up with Northern Rail the East Lancashire Community Rail Partnership to transform the station. They filled new planters and flower beds with blooms and installed their sign promoting the Sixth Form Centre to tell train users that Central Station is the destination for Burnley College.

Lecturer Tony Owen said: “Since starting to plant the greenery the students have become passionate about maintaining their work and thinking about how it can make the train passengers smile when they arrive at the station.

“Working on real countryside management projects provides our students with valuable experiences which will help their CVs to stand out when they think about what direction they want their careers to take in the future. We are delighted that Northern Rail has given them the opportunity to work on such a visual project and feel the new sign highlights how proud they are of the work the students have produced.”
