Builder leaves three hurt in police station ‘tug of war’

Builder Imran Ayub (39) looked like he was trying to bite the sergeant and had lunged at the detention officer and pinned her to a bench by her neck as he was on top of her.

Nurse Laura Hindle, who had been carrying out a medical assessment on Ayub when he started causing trouble, was shocked and upset after the protracted struggle over the coat at Burnley Police Station.

The town’s magistrates were told how Ayub, who also has a record for public order and assault offences, had curled up in a ball as he tried to stop the jacket being taken off him to be searched.

The civilian detention officer, who had gone into the defendant’s cell with the nurse, suffered a suspected broken rib and had to go off work sick as a result of the violence on October 14th.

The defendant, who claims he didn’t know he had assaulted anybody, admitted assault by beating, two counts of assaulting a designated / accredited person and possessing heroin.

Ayub, of Carr Road, Nelson, was ordered to pay compensation of £150.

Prosecutor Alex Mann said the victims were trying to detain, search and treat the defendant after he had been arrested.

He had been taken to hospital after it was suggested he had taken some drugs. Ayub was brought back to the police station at about 2-30am and was put in a cell.

John Rusius (defending) said he was a self-employed builder and family man. He had been arrested and had some drugs on him.
