Brierfield men accused of terror attack on men in parked car in Burnley

Asim Hussain and Mujahid Ansar were beaten by the five men, who had an axe, iron bars, bats and at least one knife. Mr Ansar, whose face and head was slashed with a knife, also suffered a smashed kneecap, Burnley Crown Court heard.

In the dock are Furqan Amjad (21) and Mohammed Amjad (23), of Halifax Road, Brierfield; Shabaz Khan (25), of Manchester Road, Audenshaw, Manchester; Asjid Afzal (25), of Mansfield Crescent, Brierfield; and Asim Hussain (19), of Chorley Old Road, Bolton. They all deny two counts of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm and one charge of violent disorder, last October 16th.

Mr Ian Metcalfe (prosecuting) told the court about 10 p.m. the alleged victims were in a vehicle parked in Abinger Street, off Briercliffe Road, Burnley.

They suddenly found themselves boxed in by two other cars, at the front and back. Between five and eight men got out, armed with various weapons, and attacked Mr Ansar and Mr Hussain and their car. The alleged victims were repeatedly hit to their heads and bodies with bars and bats. The men then got back into their vehicles and drove off into the night.

Mr Metcalfe said police were called by members of the public and the injured men were taken to hospital. Both were treated for wounds to their faces and scalps. Mr Ansar also had a fractured right kneecap.

The five defendants were named by one or other of their alleged victims and were picked out on identity parades. They were arrested and interviewed and all denied their presence or involvement in the incident. All provided alibis as to where they were, they said, at the time of the incident and gave details of people they said they were with.

The prosecutor continued :”All alibis, the prosecution say, were convenient. All alibis, the prosecution say, were fabricated.”
