BBC Olympic commentator role for top Burnley gymnast

BURNLEY’S own gold medal-winning gymnast swapped the pommel horse for the commentator’s box at the London Olympics.

Craig Heap (pictured) , the retired Commonwealth Games gold medal winner, provided his expert analysis of Team GB’s gymnastics team for the BBC.

And the man who also won five World and five European titles in his career, says the team outperformed everyone’s expectations.

“The target was around two medals I think so to pick up four was amazing. To be able to commentate on it and to see all the action and soak up the atmosphere for free was just a privilege.

“The Team GB gymnastics team, like so many other of our Olympians, really did excel. I am so proud of them.

“I actually tipped young Max Whitlock to do well and he didn’t disappoint. His bronze was a phenomenal achievement.” But Craig reserved his greatest praise for Beth Tweddle who visited Burnley shortly before the Games.

He added: “Beth was brilliant. It is just such a shame her landing wasn’t quite right, and but for that she would have won it. Nevertheless, her medal was so well deserved.”
