BARNOLDSWICK: Man saw red after finding girlfriend in bed with another man

A 31-year-old Barnoldswick man saw red and “brutally” attacked another man after he was said to have found him in bed with his girlfriend, a court heard.

Tariq Zia Siddiq (31), of Wellhouse Road, seemed calm when confronted with his drunken partner and her friend Lee Cunningham sharing a bed in the early hours.

But he then punched the victim in the face repeatedly and squeezed his neck.

Pennine magistrates heard how Mr Cunningham ended up with blood pouring from his face.

After being charged, Siddiq later met the victim in the street, shook his hand and said: “So, everything is sorted then?” thinking the case would not go to court.

Siddiq was convicted of assault causing actual bodily harm and witness intimidation. He was given a two-year conditional discharge and must pay £120 costs.

Mrs Alex Mann (prosecuting) said Mr Cunningham had friends round and Hannah Small, who was in a relationship with the defendant, stayed over as a guest.

She would say she was so drunk she just wanted to go to sleep and they went upstairs together.

When the defendant turned up, Mr Cunningham said he would sleep downstairs and leave the pair upstairs.

The conversation seemed amicable but the defendant suddenly punched Mr Cunningham in the face.

The victim was then grabbed and put in a headlock as he tried to restrain Siddiq.

He ended up with blood pouring from his face as the defendant continued to hit him.

The police were called and Mr Cunningham was treated for cuts around his eye at hospital.

He said Mr Cunningham was left frightened and upset by the defendant’s behaviour.

Mr David Lawson (defending) said he had not been in trouble for nine years.

He accepted it was not self defence and he had gone way over that in the “emotionally charged” situation.
