Barnoldswick man in court after taking partner ‘hostage’

A BARNOLDSWICK man left his partner and a teenage girl shaking with fear after a drunken midnight rumpus at their home, a court heard.

Ranting Samuel Simmonite had accused girlfriend Rose Robertson of sleeping around, before threatening to slit her throat, armed with a knife and hammer.

Simmonite hurled a television out of a bedroom window and told Ms Robertson he would take her hostage if police were called.

Officers arrived to find he had barricaded himself in with a sideboard and he said he would cut Ms Robertson’s throat if she let them in, Pennine magistrates were told.

The defendant had recently lost his violent father and his head was said to have “just popped” thinking of all the things his father did.

Simmonite (34), of Philip Street, admitted affray and damage and was bailed for a pre-sentence report.

Mr Andrew Robinson (prosecuting) said at 12-20 a.m. Ms Robertson was at home watching TV with a friend’s 13-year-old daughter.

The defendant arrived, ranting and raving and made threats to damage the house. The television smashed onto the patio below after being thrown from the window and police were called.

Simmonite was shouting and then made threats towards them, saying he would put an axe in their heads.

Mr Robinson said Simmonite soon had a change of heart, relented, opened the door and was arrested and questioned.

Mt Nick Dearing, for Simmonite, said he and Ms Robertson had managed to get rid of their long-standing drug problems. The defendant did not normally drink, but had gone out with friends and somebody had said something about Ms Robertson which led him to doubt her fidelity.
