William died in Pendleside before Christmas aged just 58 after a short battle with cancer. His wife Margaret, along with family and friends, decided to plan a ball in his memory and raise funds for the hospice which cared for William in his final days.

Margaret said: “Around 250 people attended the ball which was at Turf Moor in June, the day after William’s birthday. We had a raffle and an auction and raised £600 by asking people to guess how many horse shoe nails were in a glass jar.

“I’d like to thank my son Thomas and his wife Charlotte and my granddaughter Darcy, daughter Julie, William’s best friend David Fitton and farrier Ben Dewhurst who organised the ball with me.”

They are planning an event next year’s which will be held on William’s 60th birthday.
