Arts event inspired by park

The Our Park, Our Town, Our Time project at the Burnley Mechanics showcased beautiful 1930s style garments which formed the final part of the project, led by talented advanced BTEC art and fashion students at Burnley College.

There were handmade felt hats, vintage dresses, coats and accessories on display designed and created by the students, based on their research of the history of Thompson Park and Burnley’s links with the fashion industry of the time.

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Young Roots fund, the project was set up by Burnley College, working in collaboration with Burnley Leisure.

Rachel Hawthorn, arts engagement officer at Burnley Leisure, said: “We thoroughly enjoyed working with such a talented group of young people who are very passionate about fashion and the history of their town.

“Their research has provided interesting insights and we’re delighted we could capture everything in the project’s look book which was launched at the event.”

The year-long project enabled students express their learning through creative means. They mastered heritage design and making skills in felt hat making, took part in vintage photography workshops and practiced 1930s make up and styling techniques.

Their hard work and achievements have been recognised with Arts Awards, a national qualification which gives young people the opportunity to learn leadership skills and gain experience of managing arts projects.

Gold, silver and bronze awards were handed out to students at the event by the Mayor of Burnley Coun. Jeff Sumner.

Rachel added: “Congratulations to all students who received their well-deserved Arts Awards and I hope that the project have inspired them to pursue their future careers in the fashion industry.

“I’d also like to thank Burnley Council for its support of this project, and of course our thanks go to the Heritage Lottery Fund for making this project possible.”
