Around 900 homes without power in Burnley and primary school shut after explosion at sub-station

Around 900 homes in Burnley are without power after a fire broke out in the early hours of this morning at an electricty sub-station.

The incident happened around 2-35am when a fire broke out following a gas explosion at the sub-station in Brownside Road, Worsthorne-with-Hurstwood.

Two fire crews from Nelson worked with Electricity Northwest and Cadant engineers, and used a powder extinguisher and thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire.

A number of local homes, thought to be around 900 homes, suffered loss of electricity as a result of the incident.

The powercut has also forced the temporary closure of nearby Worsthorne Primary School which was without water and power.

An Electricity Northwest spokesman said staff were currenlty working at the station to get power back to the homes at 2-30pm today.

The spokesman said: "We are sorry you are experiencing a power cut. We are currently investigating the issue."
