The alert means that whilst flooding is not guaranteed, it is possible.

Padiham has suffered from two significant flood events in recent years, notably on Boxing Day, 2015, and in February last year.

The Burnley Express reported yesterday how businesses in the town were preparing for any eventuality, should the River Calder which runs through the town burst its banks.

Burnley MP Antony Higginbotham said: "I'll be keeping in regular contact with the Environment Agency, as I have over the past 48 hours and will keep you all updated if anything changes, including if the alert goes from Amber to Red.

"The various agencies have their 24/7 response teams mobilised and inspections of the river level will be continuing day and night.

"To reiterate, flooding is not expected imminently, and the river level remains well below the point at which it would break its banks, but it is possible. So please, be prepared!"
