Her trip inspired her to specialise in the study of traditional medicine and she has recently joined Clinicare at Cross Street, Nelson, to complement its team of GPs and the services they already offer.

She studied Unani-Tibb traditional medicine at Leicester’s College of Medicine and Healing Arts, an institute which draws students from around the globe and is revered for its high standard of training.

She said: “Unani-Tibb medicine is based on the teachings of Hippocrates, the ‘father of Western medicine’ and author of the oft-quoted phrase ‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’.

“In Unani-Tibb medicine the patient’s state of health is assessed using modern and traditional diagnostic methods. Then, with due consideration to their diet and lifestyle, each patient receives an individual health improvement plan outlining recommended changes and advice on nutritional supplements or a herbal prescription.”

During treatment, each patient is individually supported with regular health checks and then presented with guidelines to help them maintain their health.

One of her treated patients, Mr Mohammed Saghir, of Skipton, said: “Having been diagnosed with high blood pressure and being pre-
diabetic I had almost resigned myself to a life of medication. I didn’t expect traditional medicine to work at all, let alone so quickly and effectively. I have since recommended the treatment to family and friends and would do again.”
