Activities in Burnley libraries over the summer

Libraries in Burnley are offering a wide variety of free activities over the summer that are suitable for families and adults alike.

Activities that younger visitors to Burnley Library can enjoy include a fortnightly Saturday Lego club. Families can drop in to encourage their child's imagination and creativity. Children will get the chance to build and display their own creation, watch Lego movies in the viewing pods and play Lego video games.

A regular Age of Opportunity session is held at Coal Clough Library every Thursday from 10am to 1pm. This activity is for people aged 50 and over to support them to get a job. Coal Clough Library also holds regular digital skills sessions, and a Family History surgery.

Coding for Kids sessions are held fortnightly at Burnley Campus Library. During this activity, children will learn how to do basic coding and develop their IT and problem solving skills in a fun environment. It is suitable for children aged from eight years-old.

Burnley Campus Library holds activities suitable for young children. A regular Baby Bounce and Rhyme activity is held every Wednesday from 11am to 11.30am. This involves a lively sing-along with gentle movements and rhymes for babies and toddlers and gives parents a chance to meet with others.

Fun-filled activities are also held for pre-school aged children at Burnley Campus Library. Every Wednesday at 11am children can drop in and join in the fun.

Libraries in the area also hold regular Toddler Rhyme Time and Storytime sessions.

A Ladies Health and Wellbeing group, Handwriting, Hair Inspiration, Henna Hands and an Angular Architects sessions are also held at Burnley Campus Library.

Digital Skills sessions and a Family History Surgery can be enjoyed at Coal Clough Library.

A SCART Club Technology Task to learn to read and write in Morse Code will be held at Padiham Library. Children will be able to choose a line from their favourite book or poem and learn to read it in Morse Code. They will also be learn to read and write their name in Morse Code and then sound it out with dots and dashes on a transmitter.

County Coun. Peter Buckley, Lancashire County Council's cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: "We've got so many fun things to do during the holidays and beyond. There's much for families and adults to do, have fun or to learn something new.

"Hopefully it is easy for people to take part in an activity that they enjoy on their doorstep whilst also getting the chance to socialise with others who enjoy doing the same activities.

"There's also many opportunities for adults to gain support to learn new skills to help to apply for jobs, or to help them to use digital skills more in their life."

Taking part in many of the activities will be free, to make them as easy and accessible as possible. Some could have a small charge to cover the costs of the materials to be used.

There's no need to book many of the activities, you can just visit the library to join in.

All of the activities are offered in addition to the thousands of books that are available to borrow from each library. The titles are changed regularly, with new ones being added frequently. Books can also be ordered. A variety of audio books and CDs are also available.

Anyone who lives in the UK can join a Lancashire library, either online or by visiting in person. Membership is free and there are no age restrictions.
