Blessed Trinity pupil Luke Mason (13) was airlifted to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool, following the accident in Lyndhurst Road around 8am as the boy went out to buy cereals from a local shop.

Luke’s distraught parents, Ben and Sarah, told the Express how doctors had originally told them there was little they could do for their eldest child, but by evening he was beginning to show signs of progress.

Sarah (32) said: “Luke had only popped out to buy a box of cereals. When he didn’t come back I went out and found him laying underneath a car.

“I was hysterical. Some ladies from the local shops were helping him, and then I went with him in the air ambulance.

Doctors told us the pressure on his brain was really high and they couldn’t operate. They asked us to think about organ donation but by teatime Luke was starting to improve. The doctors have said if he does pull through he is likely to be disabled, unless he can defy the odds.”

Luke, who his parents said enjoys music and reading, lives in Mitella Street with his siblings Mia (8), Madison-Lea (7), Lillie-Mae (5) and 23 months-old Harlo.

Dad Ben said: “We have had fantastic support but it just doesn’t seem real. It’s hard to come to terms with.”

Prayers were being said at Luke’s school this week.

Blessed Trinity headteacher Richard Varey said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Luke and his family at this difficult time.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident which happened shortly before 8am on Wednesday. Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting log number 0174 of February 11th.
