THE leader of Burnley Borough Council, Charlie Briggs, faces a battle to keep hold of his seat in next month’s elections.

His Gannow ward seat is being contested by Labour’s Stephen Large, Barry Robinson, who is representing the Conservatives, and David Shapcott from the British National Party.

In the local elections, to be held on Thursday, May 5th, 48 people will fight for votes to win the 15 seats up for grabs.

There is one seat in each of the borough’s wards, two of which are currently vacant. These are in Bank Hall, where Imtiaz Hussain was disqualified for non-attendance, and Rosehill with Burnley Wood following the death of Frank Ashworth in February.

Former BNP group leader Len Starr, who represented Hapton with Park, and Lib-Dem Maureen McCaffrey, who held a seat in Coal Clough with Deerplay, are not seeking re-election.

The council’s only independent councillor, John Jones, has also decided not to stand for election, which means that there will be no independent members of the council.Of the candidates, the largest numbers are being fielded by the current ruling Lib-Dems and the Labour Party, one in each of the wards. The Conservatives have 10 nominees, the BNP has seven, including three members of the same family, and the UK Independence Party has put forward one candidate.
