The gas main replacement scheme starts on Tuesday.

The North West Gas Alliance has already put up a sign warning people that it is going to be a long contract and adds that delays are expected to take place while the work is carried out. But there are not expected to be road closures.

The sign is placed on Manchester Road, Nelson, at the junction with Broadway and Stanley Street in the town centre, warning drivers they are likely to be affected by the work.

It involves laying new pipes to keep gas flowing to homes, businesses, shops and offices across Nelson and Brierfield.

National Grid, working in partnership with Balfour Beatty, will be carrying out the 10 month long programme of work to replace metal gas mains with modern plastic gas pipes designed to last at least 80 years.

A total of three kilometres of gas mains will be replaced. Of this, 1.5km of new main will be laid along Manchester Road and the rest on roads and streets in the area.

Work will be carried out in the spring and summer in Nelson on Carr Road, Cross Street, Wellington Street, Every Street, Bowness Avenue, Bradshaw Street, Percy Street, Lomeshaye Road, Victoria Street, Bentley Street, Hibson Road and the footpath at the rear of Romney Street.

And in Brierfield, Mansfield Crescent, Mansfield Grove, Montrose Street, William Street, Elland Road, Rothesay Road, Taylor Street and Woodville Road will be affected.

Work will be carried out during the autumn/winter in Brierfield on Colne Road, Burnley Road, Montford Road, Glen Way, and Hollin Bank, and in Nelson, Brunswick Street, Leeds Road, Market Street, New Scotland Road and Scotland Road.

The work along Manchester Road and through Brierfield starts on Tuesday and will be completed by late January. National Grid will be using a special technique to insert the new plastic gas main inside the old metal main to reduce the need for excavations along the main road.

Mr Stephen Murray, contract manager, National Grid said: “People in Nelson enjoy a safe and reliable gas supply and our job is to make sure it stays that way.
