YOUNG Thomas Blanchard reeled in a monster 17lb pike from Lowerhouse Lodge.
The 10-year-old, who attends Christ the King School, was fishing at the lodge earlier this month with his great uncle Richard Burrow, and started with a method feeder filled with maggots and ground bait, and straight away he caught a small skimmer, before Richard tried to catch a carp on the wall in the middle of the lodge with two pellets.
After around 10 minutes, the line shot right off, and though he struggled to get it in, out came an 8 lb carp.
There followed a skimmer and three carp, before the pair landed an 11lb carp.
But that wasn’t the catch of the day.
Three skimmers later they decided to try for a pike, with Richard setting up the rod with sea dead bait. After an hour or so, back on the carp rod, Thomas immediately hooked one.
But as they were weighing the carp, the pike rod flew off, and Thomas, after 10 minutes of fighting, got a glimpse of what they had been waiting for - a fat, broad pike.
To their amazement, the scales read 17 lbs!
