Loco...Slammo...Jammo skateboard contest at Clitheroe

The Grand Skate Park, in the Castle Grounds, will stage its biggest ever skateboard competition on Saturday when the “loco….’slammo… jammo’….” rolls into town.

“We’ve skaters coming from all over the North – it is going to be a fantastic event,” said Grand Skate Park co-ordinator Luke Cooper. “We’ve got a group of DJs, Bear Chills, from Blackburn, and there will be a barbecue, too, plus plenty of other stuff going on.”

The Clitheroe skatepark opened in 2008 and thousands of youngsters have come from far and wide to use the facility, operated and managed by the Grand.

Skater James Hedford, from Accrington, said: “I’ve been skating since I was 13 and I’m passionate about the sport. I’ve made some really good friends through skating at the park, and one day would like to open a shop selling skateboards. I broke my ankle skating, but was determined to get back skating again at Clitheroe and I did.”

Luke has started a skate park forum, encouraging users of the facility to take ownership of the park’s future and activities. “The skate park is a safe, positive, environment for youngsters to come and learn and do their stuff,” added Luke. “It is like a family and is going from strength to strength in terms of the youngsters using it.”

Dan Giles, a BMX bike rider who attends Ribblesdale High School, said: “Other riders inspire you to improve – it is a fantastic sport to be involved in. I’ve done BMX for a couple of years and do a lot of practice in my spare time. The skate park is getting more recognised and there is always a great atmosphere.”

Luke added: “Some days we have 70 people down at the track, and instead of sitting at home on their PlayStation they are engaged in a really positive activity.

“I see it is a really healthy thing for mind and body, because every day you want go and skate, learn new tricks, meet new friends and support and encourage each other.
