Light Up A Life appeal launched at Pendleside Hospice

The annual campaign to remember the lives of loved ones has been launched by Pendleside Hospice.

The Light Up A Life campaign, now in its 12th year, allows people to remember loved ones at Christmas by dedicating a coloured light to their memory.

The lights are displayed around the outside of the hospice building in Colne Road, Reedley, and are first switched on the weekend before Christmas at two special services.

This year’s services will be held on December 18th and 19th starting at 3-30 p.m. and will include seasonal carols and readings and an appearance from singer Grace O’Malley.

The services will be led by the hospice’s spiritual care co-ordinator, Chris Cheeseman, and conclude with piper Steve Sumner playing a lament.

Hospice fund-raising manager Mrs Kaye Bartle said: “Light Up A Life is a wonderful event allowing people to cherish memories of loved ones at a time that can be particularly painful if that special person is no longer around, especially if this is the first year without that person. At the switch-on services we all come together to remember our loved ones and hold on to those precious memories that we have of them. The lights act as a focal point for our memories and symbolise hope for the future.”

Anyone who remembers a loved one receives a Light Up A Life card and a voucher redeemable for either a Light Up A Life pin badge or Christmas tree decoration.

After Christmas the names of everyone remembered will be entered into a leather-bound Book of Remembrance, that is kept on display at the hospice throughout the year.

Last year’s campaign raised the record amount of £103,000 and fund-raisers are keen to beat that figure this year. Anyone wanting to dedicate a lightbulb can pick up a leaflet at the hospice shops, hospice reception, Alderson and Horan or Co-operative Funeral Services or can make a dedication by telephone with a credit or debit card on 01282 440120.
