Learn a new way to keep fit - Nordic Walking

A NEW walking sensation is about to hit Pendle – promising to improve the health and fitness of those who take part.

Nordic Walking is a way of walking with poles that developed from off-season training done by professional skiers. Walkers use specially designed poles with a technique similar to the action of cross-country skiing.

Nordic Walking is a whole body exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all fitness levels. More than 10 million people worldwide practise Nordic Walking regularly and in Finland, where the activity was first developed, 20% of the population are regular Nordic Walkers.

Pendle Leisure Trust’s Out and About Project (formerly Let’s Walk) will be delivering Nordic Walking sessions from late June.

Project co-ordinator and qualified British Nordic Walking instructor Wayne Bowman said: “Nordic Walking is based on the natural movement patterns of walking; if you can walk, you can Nordic Walk!

“With the help of a qualified instructor people can improve their health and well-being dramatically.

“As well as increasing your heart rate and burning more calories, Nordic Walking has been proven to release tension in the neck, increase the rotational mobility of the spine, without aggravating joint problems.”

The project will run sessions in Alkincoates Park, Colne, on Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for beginners and 11-15 a.m. to 12-30 p.m. for a regular group walk.

Unless you have Nordic Walked before you must attend the beginners’ sessions first. The cost will be £3 per session including hire of the Nordic Walking Poles. Anyone interested should contact Wayne Bowman on 01282 661315 or email [email protected].
