Residents in Read have been asked for their views on the plan to build 50 houses on the site known as Hammond Ground off Whalley Road.

The agent for the development took the unusual step of holding a public consultation before the plans have even been submitted to Ribble Valley Borough Council.

An exhibition was held at Read and Simonstone Constitutional Club and visitors were asked for feedback.

The trustees of Hammond Ground plan to erect the homes, which will include family and affordable houses with associated roads for access, public open space and a pond. There will also be 30 bungalows aimed at the over 55s as Ribble Valley Borough Council has recognised the need for more houses to cater for the aging population.

The council recently updated its policy and ongoing strategy to encourage developers to build more bungalows especially in the Read and Simonstone area which has been indentified as having a need for this type of property.

According to stories the land contains the remains of soldiers who fought in the civil war, mine shafts and also the remains of soldiers who fought in the Battle of Read Old Bridge in 1643.

The development could have a major impact on the village and initial concerns have been expressed about how the infrastructure of Read would cope as there is only one primary school and no GP surgery.
