BRIERFIELD: Work starts on regeneration of Lob Lane Mill site

The main structure stands off Clitheroe Road and has a spectacular four-storey frontage on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

The project is being carried out by PEARL 2 - Pendle Enterprise and Regeneration 2 Ltd - a joint venture by Pendle Council and Nelson-based development giant Barnfield Construction.

The original part of the mill - a weaving shed - was built by the Veevers family in 1859, and they stayed connected with the site for 100 years. It was called Lob Lane Shed originally but more recently was known as Brierfield Shed.

Since the 1960s, it has had various roles including being a plastics factory.

The key factor is to save the four-storey section which faces the canal by converting it into apartments, while the less attractive areas of the mill are being demolished to make way for new houses.

It will result in 60 new homes on the site, and will help regenerate that part of Brierfield. Phase 1 is due to be completed by this summer.

The frontage not only looks over the lovely section of the canal but has splendid views of Pendle Hill and its surrounding countryside.

The project is part of the Housing Market Renewel scheme and has the backing of the Homes and Communities Agency and Regenerate Pennine Lancashire.
