Garrick perform ‘Funny Money’ at Nelson’s ACE Centre

THE Garrick is staging a fast and funny farce about a man who picks up the wrong briefcase – and finds it contains £2m. And it produces a million laughs.

The Ray Cooney comedy “Funny Money” is very entertaining, and went down well with the opening night audience at the ACE Centre, Nelson, on Wednesday.

Directed by Barbara Simpson, it has a talented cast which makes most of the script.

There is a great performance from Ken Entwistle as Henry, who found the briefcase and plans to go abroad straight away. Lynne Atkinson shows plenty of skill as Jean, his wife.

She is strict when sober, but the complexity of the cash turns her in to a drunk.

Brian Haworth as Henry’s mate Vic, creates a confused character and he is also good at coping with comedy, and Lesley Howarth as Betty is funny and full of charisma too.

Stephen Dixon is Davenport, a cop whose is a criminal, and he fulfils the role, as does Steve Grist – a more honest detective – who thinks Henry has been bumped off.

And Keith Pounder is great as taxi driver Bill, who has an awful lot to cope with.

Completing the line-up is David Kendrick a run-down rogue ready to shoot the entire cast.

It is a fast performance and the team is very much on top of the script. The stage is well set and the whole thing works very well. You can see Funny Money at the ACE tonight and tomorrow at 7-30 p.m.
